ブライアンさんからパサディナコミュニティセンターについて話を伺った。その後リトルトウキョウのコミュニティセンターで今田さんと樋口さんの話を伺った。彼らの話から、コミュニティや日系文化を守ることへの強い想いを感じた。多くの日系人が日本文化の大切さを感じている中、活動をしている人は少ないように思う。だからこそ彼らの活動に敬意を抱いた。私の中では、悲しいが日系文化はやがて大きく変化していってしまうのではないかと考えていた。しかし、それでも失わない「コア」な部分がある、そこを引き継いでいきたいと語っていた。

LAに行くまで、アメリカ人なのに、遠く日本がルーツであるとして日本の文化・精神を大切にすることに矛盾を感じていた。しかし、多様な中だからこそ自分のアイデンティティについて考える機会が多いのだと学ぶことができた。そして、アメリカ人だからこそ自分のルーツとして日本があるとして引き継いでいる日本文化があるのだろう。初めて納得できたように思う。

We heard the story about Pasadina Community Center by Mr.Bryan. After that we move to Little Tokyo Community Center and meet with Mr.Imada and Ms.Higuchi. It gave me impression. They did lots acts of faith to preserve Nikkei culture and community.    Almost all of Nikkei people feel importance to preserve own culture but just few people do action now, so I want to show respect to their acts. However I thought in sadly culture will be changing even they want to preserve it. Their answer about my concern is that the changing is inevitable but we should hand off our cultural core value and place to feel our rout. I have had contradiction about Nikkei, they said we are ‘American’ while our core value is the same as Japanese. However now, I can understand what they want to say. In LA, or UAS, people have different culture, belief, race and rout. This environment is can’t be shown in Japan. Because there are many differences, they have to consider their own identity. Then because they are American, they consider Japanese culture to their core. Now I think, Nikkei culture will be change according to era and generation but they will be take core value and their identity as Nikkei.
