研修６日目は、日系コミュニティーの重要なコミュニケーションツールの１つである「羅府新報社」を訪れました。

「羅府」とは、ロサンゼルスの漢字読みであり、１９０３年から創刊され１３０年以上ロサンゼルスだけでなく、ハワイ、ブラジル、ペルーの日系コミュニティーを中心に読まれている新聞です。創刊当初は、日本語版のみの発行でしたが、戦前から英語版も取り入れ、今では日本語と英語の記事で発行されています。

羅府新報の中でも、重要な欄は「死亡通知」であるとのお話を聞きました。例え離れた場所に住んでいても、新聞を通して情報を交換するコミュニティーの強さを感じました。

午後は、ゼミのメンバーで買い物を楽しみ、夜は３日目にお世話になったホストファミリーの皆様とFarewell dinnerをしました。つかの間でしたが私たちを家族のように温かく迎え入れてくれたファミリーとの貴重な時間を過ごすことができました。

On the 6th day, we visited “Rafu Shimpo”. They publishes the important newspaper for Japanese American community.

The name of newspaper means Los Angeles. (“ra ” is a Chinise name for Los Angeles, “fu” meaning prefecture and “shimpo” a term for newspaper). This paper has been read by Japanese American community in LA, Hawaii, Brazil or Peru since 1903. Foundation of a periodical was the publication only for Japanese editions at first, but they take in the English version  from prewar days and are published by Japanese and an English article now.

In Rafu Shimpo, the important column is “obituary “. I felt strength of the community which changed information through a newspaper even if they lived in the remote place.

In the afternoon, We enjoyed shopping in the members of the seminar and did Farewell dinner with host families which were taken care of on the third day. It was transient, but was able to spend the valuable time with the family which welcomed us like a family.
