２０１６年春休みを利用し、アメリカ・ロサンゼルスに約一週間ゼミ研修で訪れました。。研修の主旨は、日系人コミュニティの調査で、日系人が、歴史が流れる過程でどのような困難を生き、戦時中のアメリカによる敵意と偏見に勝利するまでのプロセスを日系人はどう生き、現在に残るリトル東京という日系人コミュニティはどのようにして育まれ守られ続けているのか。さらにどうしてそのコミュニティを守る必要があるのか。コーディネーターのBryan Takedaさんのおかげで、さまざまな日系人の方が活動しておられる機関へ訪問し、お話を伺うことで日系人コミュニティに対する理解の深化に努めることができました。この機会は日系アメリカ人についてだけでなく、我々日本人としてもアイデンティティについて考える良い経験となりました。研修の主旨とは別に、UCLA（University of California Los Angeles）キャンパスにて、日系アメリカ人学生と二つのトピック（就職活動と日本のグローバル化）について意見交換をもつ時間をとれました。その際、日本の就職活動に見られる一斉採用のシステムや日本人のグローバル対応が難しいことの実態における話し合いはとても日本という国特有の文化に根付いた所以であり、アメリカに住む学生のシステムに囚われない自由な考え方が印象的でした。全体を通して、今回の研修では日系アメリカ人の方が厳しい歴史を生き抜いた強い意思と強く確立されたアイデンティティを後世へ受け継ぐ努力を学び得る貴重な機会でした。

We visited Los Angeles, California in the United States of America. (from Jan.29 to Feb.4)The main reason we went to was to study Japanese American community, how much they are struggled with living in the states during World WarⅡ, and the process they won their hostility and prejudice. Based on their history, they currently have a “Little Tokyo” where we visited as this short study tour. What we focused on was why “Little Tokyo” is important for Japanese American, how they built their community, and why they would like to maintain and get expand by including young ages. Thanks to Bryan Takeda, a coordinator of this study tour, we successfully achieved deep learning of Japanese American community by visiting some organizations and getting some lectures. We understood how they are proud of being who they are (Japanese American) because of their ancestor’s brave history. Along with the main purpose, we had a chance to discuss 2 topics with Asian students in UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) both Japanese job hunting process and the actual Japanese situation against globalization. We found lots of unique systems related to culture. For example, because of conformity culture, we start looking for jobs together and being trained equally. Of course we will be expected to stay at the job for a while. On the other hand, it is critically important to have what we can bring in the company in the USA. That is why they usually start internship after they graduate University. When I ask a question, “How would you feel if you had to spend almost half a year or event most of your senior year job hunting in order to secure your job?” They answered, “Horrible.” It was impressive to see our system difference affected by each culture. Overall, this study tour was our great opportunity to learn where our identity comes from by the study of Japanese American’s history and endeavor to keep it important for coming generation.
