二日目午前中は、リトルトウキョウにある全米日系人博物館に訪れました。
全米日系人博物館は、日系アメリカ人に関する展示や文書,出版物,教育プログラムを通して、日系アメリカ人の歴史を全世界の人々に伝えるために設立されました。館内では、日系アメリカ人の方に案内をして頂きました。その中でも、印象深く記憶に残っているのはこんな話です。

「“人種のるつぼ”とも称されるアメリカは、親の血縁関係なくアメリカで生まれた人をアメリカ人として認める多様性豊かな国。日系アメリカ人も、2世以降はアメリカに出生地を持つれっきとしたアメリカ人なのです。」

日系アメリカ人は、“日本にルーツを持つ”という理由だけで厳しい生活環境を強いられ、不当な人種差別を受けてきました。「事実を風化させないように」「もう二度と同じ出来事が起きないように」博物館設立には、そんな日系アメリカ人の切なる思いが詰まっています。

On the 2nd day, we visited Japanese museum. The museum is dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry, an integral part of U.S. history and culture through exhibitions, resources, public programs. In the museum, Japanese Americans guided us and she told us an impressive story:

“The United States, called the ‘melting pot’, is a country that recognizes people born in the U.S. regardless of their parents relatives. As such, Japanese Americans are Americans too.”

Japanese Americans have suffered severe living conditions and unfair racial discrimination. In establishing the museum, there is a feeling of “We should not weaken the facts of past regarding Japanese Americans”.
